Yakubu Gowon And His False Claim That Preserving The Unity Of Nigeria Was The Motive For The Nigeria-Biafra War Of 1967-1970: A Rejoinder By Tony Nnadi.

In the early hours of June 8, 2025, as I contemplated what could be an appropriate anniversary note to Nigerians, 27 years after the June 8, 1998 demise of Nigeria’s former maximum ruler, Sani Abacha, the internet came awash with a most nauseating news report on Yakubu Gowon’s claim that the Nigeria-Biafra War of 1967-1970 was waged by the illicit Federal Government he headed in the effort to preserve the Unity of Nigeria and that the War was not his choice. He went on with his trademark jaded and hollow admonitions about forgiveness and reconciliation, compounded by the sacrilegious ‘Nigeria Prays’ Mockery of God prayer ministry that Gowon leads.

Once more, the truth is being assaulted and our collective intelligence is being insulted by the “congenital liar” called Yakubu Gowon who has obdurately continued the rehashing of the lies he and his accomplices crafted over 58 years ago (1967) to justify the launch of a Genocidal War against the Eastern Region of Nigeria in July of 1967.

Gowon shows himself as a congenital liar and so incorrigibly dishonest [see NOTES section below] that even with mountains of raw evidence of what transpired and with confessions from every imaginable quarter that have established the truth, he continues to regurgitate the lies that have long been overtaken by overwhelming evidence of the Truth. 

Incidentally, it has pleased Providence to keep him alive, not only to see the consequences of his deceits, lies and heartless bloodletting and hatred against the Igbo but also to witness the miserable collapse of the Unitary Nigeria he and his demented co-travellers erected on the pool of the blood of millions of innocent Igbo, including the two million Igbo children he and his partners-in-crime starved to death.

Gowon’s false claim that the Genocidal War was for the Unity of Nigeria has long been debunked by one of his co-murderers and partner-in-crime, Colonel Benjamin Adekunle who admitted that the Nigeria-Biafra War was all for the purpose of seizing and taking over the Oil and Gas Assets of Biafra (ie Nigeria’s Eastern Region of the time).

Benjamin Adekunle, who prided himself as “the Scorpion” was one of Gowon’s most brutal commanders on the frontlines of Nigeria’s Genocide against Biafra. The Distressed Unitary Nigeria of now is built on the foundation of many lies. From the fraudulent 1999 Constitution to the false narratives used to subjugate indigenous Ethnic Nations. A villain of the genocidal Biafra War admitted that it was all about seizing the oil of the then Biafrans, and nothing to do with keeping Nigeria’s “Unity”. So, even today, what is the talk of “Unity” of Nigeria truly about? The evidence is there: it is to facilitate and effect the Fulani Conquest Agenda against indigenous Nigerians to grab their lands and resources, and completely change the demographics and future of this West African space.

BEFORE THE SUN SETS:
It would have been expected that Yakubu Gowon at over 90 years, and seeing the bloodbath around Nigeria, particularly his part of Nigeria; and the miserable conditions of the Unitary Nigeria which he and his Confederates massacred millions of Easterners (particularly the Igbo) to Keep Nigeria One, will find courage to speak the truth that may set the over 200 million people currently trapped in the cauldron of Unitary Nigeria free. 

Not only should Gowon declare the Truth about the Genocidal War he levied against an innocent people, he must also find the courage to admit that the Unitary Constitution that was imposed on Nigeria as Victory Charter from that War of Genocide by his partners-in-crime and successors-in-office, Murtala Mohammed and Olusegun Obasanjo, is at the Core of the current Failures and Travails of Nigeria, the bloodletting across Nigeria, and the misery of the Peoples of Nigeria. 

Most importantly, Gowon must, as an act of penitence, find his voice to join the many other voices that now demand the Termination and Wholesale Decommissioning of the Unitary Constitutional Order he and his Confederates in the Nigerian Military imposed on a Federal Union. 

Yakubu Gowon must now declare to Nigeria and the World that Nigeria is doomed unless the decades of Genocide and War, being orchestrated by the rest of Nigeria against the Igbo East is ended by the Termination and Total Renegotiation, Reconfiguration and Reconstruction of the Unitary Constitutional Order Imposed on Nigeria in furtherance of that War.

With the collapse of the Federation of Nigeria in July 1966 by the military coups, the “Federal Government” headed by Gowon was an illicit one. Under such a status, Gowon waged an unjustifiable, cruel and genocidal war against peoples of the East of Nigeria who were being slaughtered in their tens of thousands, so escaped the pogroms by seeking refuge in their ancestral lands, and using their inalienable right of Sovereignty, declared their own country Biafra Republic, after the same Gowon had unilaterally and shamelessly reneged on the Aburi Accord that would have set Nigeria straight.
It is a historical fact that Gowon has shown dishonesty, unreliability, and told falsehoods including not admitting that it was his Decree 14 of May 1967 that destroyed the Federal STRUCTURE of Nigeria and not Ironsi who has been wrongly given that blame. Just as the evils that Hitler the genocider did follow him, so too will what the genocider Gowon did follow him. The blood of his Biafran victims including millions of children deliberately starved to death, continue to call out for justice. Their blood also calls out for the world to acknowledge through facts and evidence that Gowon was not an honourable hero, but quite the opposite.
